Max Holloway vs. Jose Aldo rematch will headline UFC 218 *POLL*

Postby moose84 » Nov 11. 2017, 15:02

Frankie Edgar’s injury is to Jose Aldo’s benefit, as Aldo will now rematch Max Holloway for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 218 on December 2nd. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reported the news on Saturday.

Aldo (26-3) was scheduled to face Ricardo Lamas at UFC on FOX 26 on December 16th, but obviously that’s now off the table and UFC officials will have to figure out what’s next for Lamas.

It’s an unexpected immediate opportunity for Aldo to once again become the 145-pound king, as he lost his belt to Max Holloway by third-round TKO at UFC 212 in Brazil. Sandwiched in between his stoppage losses to Conor McGregor and Holloway is a clear-cut unanimous decision over Frankie Edgar at UFC 200. At the time, Aldo vs. Edgar 2 was for the interim title while McGregor wasn’t defending (and ultimately never defended) the undisputed belt, but the consensus greatest featherweight of all-time was promoted to full champ status after McGregor’s title was vacated.

Holloway (18-3) has won a whopping 11 straight fights, including winning the interim featherweight strap against Anthony Pettis at UFC 206, as well as a thrilling (but one-sided) unanimous decision over Ricardo Lamas at UFC 199, and a thorough beating and submission of Cub Swanson at UFC on FOX 15. The last man to beat him inside the Octagon is former featherweight champion Conor McGregor, who won a decision against the Hawaiian in August 2013. Since then, Holloway has been an absolute machine, and is a consistent must-watch.

UFC 218 also features a co-main event of Francis Ngannou vs. Alistair Overeem, Eddie Alvarez vs. Justin Gaethje, Henry Cejudo vs. Sergio Pettis, Tecia Torres vs. Michelle Waterson, and Paul Felder vs. Charles Oliveira. The pay-per-view event will take place at the Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit, Michigan.

With everything that went down between Aldo and the UFC, Aldo should count his blessings for getting this title shot

Jup, I don't see different ending. Well, Aldo can still use his leg kicks, but that won't be enough, I think.

To be honest I can't get excited about this fight. Holloway soundly beat him last time, and has shown the ability to not only overcome adversity but also adapt to the ever changing landscape of the sport of MMA. He really is the man to beat at FW right now, and not just because he is the champ. Aldo used to be a world beater, but sorry to say I don't think his heart is in it as much as it used to be. When Aldo is at his best he is quite possibly the greatest lighter weight fighter of all time, but just like when people argued that about BJ Penn we all knew that it would eventually come to end. Aldo needs to either retire from the sport altogether if he loses this one, or move on to Bellator or some other organization. To be completely fair he shouldn't be getting this title shot to begin with. I have never agreed with giving a fighter a rematch who had just recently been beaten quite soundly by their opponent, but hey that's just my opinion on the matter.
