Conor McGregor's road to superstardom: From skinny kid nicknamed 'Snowball' to $500m Floyd Mayweather fight

Image

Back in 1998, a slightly built 10-year-old boy, who had been nicknamed Snowball because of his white-blond pudding-bowl-cut hair, walked into the Crumlin Boxing Club in Dublin and made an immediate impression. A bad impression. Because Conor McGregor, who would grow up to be the fighting machine taking on boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas early on Sunday, was trailing mud all through the gym. Retired head coach Phil Sutcliffe recalls: “Conor came in wearing muddy football boots, so we gave him a right telling off. “He asked to join and we told him to get some forms from the office for his parents, who were outside. Instead of doing that, he started punching a bag.

"He still hadn’t taken off the boots so we roared at him. “That was the Friday. He came back on the Saturday and almost every day for the next seven years.” That hard work and determination made Conor a mixed martial arts legend and earned Snowball a new nickname – The Notorious. His incredible £500million bout with Mayweather is billed as the richest fight in boxing history. Mayweather, 40, is undefeated in his professional boxing career and a five-division world champion. Conor is a two-weight Ultimate Fighting Championship king, but this is his first professional boxing match. He is the underdog, but is still expected to earn £58million from the fight.

The trash talking between Floyd and Conor in the lead-up to their fight has reached epic levels. And Conor’s former coach Phil would give him a ticking off for that. He says: “I don’t like the way Conor talks now. We’d never allow him to do that in the club. No one was allowed to curse, not even the coaches. “Conor was never cheeky or lippy here, but he did have the self belief he has today. He came here to win titles.”

Conor, 29, was named by Forbes as the world’s 24th highest-paid athlete, one place behind Usain Bolt. When Conor was born on July 14, 1988, the midwife had prophetic words for his dad Tony and mum Margaret. Tony, 58, says: “His fists were clenched coming out of the womb, so he was ready to fight. The midwife said, ‘This fella is going to be a boxer’.” Until the age of 10, Conor was football mad. But he took up boxing so he could defend himself against school bullies.

Conor has said: “When I was really young, I felt like I needed to be able to defend myself. "So I thought, ‘I’m going to go and train, so if anyone says anything to me they’re going to know about it’. That’s how I started. “I emptied my books from my school bag and only carried the weight off a dumbbell. I always walked home with the bag a little bit open, ready to go, in case anything happened. “I’d plan what would happen if I came across any bullies. I had little routines in my head. I wanted to hit them enough so I could get away and get myself to safety.

“I didn’t care about sport then and I still really don’t. I didn’t get into martial arts to be the All Ireland Champion or World Champion. I got into it so people would say, ‘This guy is doing a bit of training, we’ll just leave him alone’. “Turns out I was good at it.” When the family moved to Lucan, South Dublin, 12-year-old Conor met new friends at Irish-speaking school Coláiste Cois Life, including Tomas “The Tank” Egan, who piqued his interest in mixed martial arts. Tomas Ó’Donnagain, now school principal, was Conor’s careers adviser back then. He says: “Conor was always talkative, but we didn’t see the backchat we see now.

“Tom Egan was more into martial arts than Conor was at the time, and the pair of them used to smell out the classroom eating giant tuna rolls, insisting it was good nutrition. "Students also aren’t allowed to drink in class, but they were always drinking water and telling me it was vital to stay hydrated. “Conor didn’t work too hard at school because his interest was always sport. Could he have gone on to be a lawyer? "Anything’s possible. He’s an example of achieving goals if you work really, really hard.”

In 2007, Conor joined the Straight Blast Gym, a specialist in mixed martial arts, and was hooked. He pestered gym boss John Kavanagh to open up at all hours until John, who will be in Conor’s corner in Vegas, gave him a key. Bowing to parental pressure after leaving school, Conor became an apprentice plumber. He has said: “The other men were stooped and dead in the eyes. The 12-hour shifts were interfering with my training and nutrition. I gave it up.”

Conor was sure his sport would make him rich. His parents were not convinced. Conor said: “They said, ‘Who else has done it?' There was no one before me. “I remember saying, ‘At 25 years of age I will be a self-made millionaire’. My father laughed at me. I was a year late, but I did it.” Tony later gave up his job as a taxi driver when Conor paid off his mortgage. Quitting plumbing landed Conor on the dole, but it meant he could train twice a day.

At home, he did bear crawls around the house, made dents in the walls practising sidekicks and studied videos of animals hunting their prey. By his seventh fight he knocked out his opponent in just over two minutes. His next knockout took 16 seconds, the following KO just four seconds. UFC President Dana White signed him the first time he saw him fight and said: “I guess the hype is real.”
Today Conor, who lives with partner Dee Devlin, 30, and their three-month-old son Conor jnr, is the highest paid athlete in the history of mixed martial arts. He is known for his generosity, buying new BMWs for his mum, dad and sisters Erin, 37, and Aoife, 32.

He named his yacht The 188, which was the amount in euros Conor got on the dole until his first UFC fight in 2013. Back at the Crumlin Boxing Club, where Conor’s mum Mags, 58, still does aerobics, Phil remembers the days when Conor’s finances were tight. He says: “It cost 50p a week to train. We we knew not to chase Conor for subs. No one was well off here then.” Phil is counting the hours until the fight and says: “His backhand, his stance, the way he moves around the ring – they are all Crumlin Boxing Club moves.

"I’ll be watching on television because I can’t afford to go to Vegas. "My son will be there – even though he can’t really afford to go either. “None of Conor’s friends here will ever forget him and we hope he won’t forget us. "Especially Paddy Brady. He bought Conor his apprentice plumber tools – and Conor still owes him £70.”

Gogh is in "denial mode" at the moment. He's frantically posting thread after thread on Jon Jones in hope that he pushes all the McGregor stuff to the back page
"Not again!"- Gogh
