Kelvin Gastelum flagged by USADA for marijuana, pulled from Anderson Silva fight

Image

Kelvin Gastelum has been pulled from his UFC 212 fight against Anderson Silva after potentially testing positive for marijuana metabolites in an in-competition drug test conducted by USADA, the UFC announced Thursday.
Gastelum, 25, was flagged for a potential anti-doping violation stemming from an in-competition drug test collected in conjunction with his March 11 victory over Vitor Belfort at UFC Fight Night 106, according to a UFC statement. Gastelum was flagged for Carboxy-Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as Carboxy-THC, “which is a metabolite of marijuana and/or hashish.”
The legal decision limit for Carboxy-THC in-competition is 180 ng/mL, per WADA standards.
Gastelum (14-2) defeated Belfort via first-round TKO at UFC Fight Night 106 to propel himself into the top-10 of the UFC middleweight rankings.
As a result of the announcement, Gastelum has been placed on provisional suspension and forced to withdraw from his June 3 contest against Silva. Representatives from Silva’s team informed MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani that the former UFC middleweight champion still wishes to remain on the card, however no new opponent has been found at the time of this writing.
A former winner of The Ultimate Fighter 17, Gastelum racked up a 6-2 UFC record as a top welterweight prospect before moving up to the middleweight division in late-2016 due to his continued struggles cutting down to the 170-pound limit. Gastelum has since won back-to-back fights in dominant fashion at 185 pounds, stopping both Tim Kennedy and Belfort inside the distance.
The UFC’s statement can be read below.
The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) informed Kelvin Gastelum of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation involving Carboxy-Tetrahydrocannabinol (“Carboxy-THC”) which is a metabolite of marijuana and/or hashish, above the decision limit of 180 ng/mL, stemming from an in-competition sample collected in conjunction with his recent bout in Fortaleza, Brazil on March 11, 2017.
USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Gastelum, as it relates to the UFC Anti-Doping Policy and future UFC participation. Because the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) was the regulatory body overseeing the fight in Fortaleza and has licensing jurisdiction over Gastelum, USADA will work to ensure that the Commission has the necessary information to determine its proper judgment of Gastelum’s potential anti-doping violation. Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.
As a result of the potential anti-doping violation against Gastelum, USADA has placed him under a provisional suspension. While the UFC Anti-Doping Policy affords Gastelum full and fair due process rights before any possible adjudication of his case, because of the proximity to Gastelum’s scheduled June 3rd bout against Anderson Silva, Gastelum is being removed from the card and a replacement is currently being sought.

UFC Strawweight Jessica Penne Flagged by USADA Upon Analysis of ‘Biological Passport’

Image

Jessica Penne has been flagged by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency upon review of her biological passport — a first for an athlete within the UFC.

Penne initially submitted a negative sample in an out-of-competition drug test administered on March 20. However, Penne was flagged following a re-analysis of the sample.

“Penne’s sample, having undergone the standard out-competition analysis menu, was initially reported to USADA as negative. However, upon review of Penne’s Athlete Biological Passport, the sample was subsequently flagged for additional analysis due to an increased degree of variability in urinary biomarkers measured in the sample,” the statement read. “As a result of that further analysis, the presence of a prohibited substance was detected. Before the reanalysis was completed, Penne fought at the UFC Fight Night event in Nashville on April 22, 2017.”

Penne dropped a unanimous decision to Danielle Taylor at UFC Fight Night 108, her third consecutive defeat within the Las Vegas-based promotion. The event took place under the jurisdiction of the Tennessee Athletic Commission, and USADA will make sure the commission has all the necessary information to determine an appropriate punishment regarding Penne’s case.

Otherwise, USADA will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of the case, and Penne will be entitled to a full and fair legal review process. The substance for which Penne tested positive was not revealed.

Cortney Casey fails drug test at UFC 211, win against Jessica Aguilar overturned to no-contest

Image

A dominant win for Cortney Casey is now no longer a victory in the official record books.

The UFC strawweight fighter tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone in an in-competition drug screen at UFC 211 on May 13 in Dallas, per drug-test results obtained by MMA Fighting on Friday via an open records request with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
Casey’s unanimous decision win over Jessica Aguilar has been overturned to a no-contest by the TDLR due to the failure. The change is already reflected on mixedmartialarts.com, the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports’ (ABC) official record keeper.
Sources also confirmed that Casey is currently under suspension for three months on the ABC database, the typical suspension for a failed drug test in Texas. The standard fine in such a situation in Texas is $2,000.
Per the drug-test results, Casey’s testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio was 5.4:1. Anything over 4:1 is flagged in Texas.
An elevated T:E ratio does not mean Casey was taking prohibited substances. The World Anti-Doping Policy (WADA) threshold is also 4:1, but that would not immediately lead to a sanction. The sample would be further tested via isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) to determine whether or not the elevated levels came from the ingestion of exogenous testosterone. Only then would a disciplinary case be opened.
After a flagged T:E ratio in Texas, the TDLR will only do a followup test if an athlete discloses he or she is taking a substance that might elevate it, and Casey did not disclose any substance, sources said.
USADA is the UFC’s official anti-doping partner, but it’s undetermined if it will be pursuing any sanctions on Casey. UFC vice president of health and performance Jeff Novitzky told MMA Fighting that USADA has not informed the UFC about any case involving Casey.
“We have not been informed by USADA of anything regarding a potential anti-doping policy violation for Cortney Casey,” Novitzky said. “No positive tests, no suspicion of anything — now or in the past. USADA has not been in contact with us about anything at all related to that.”
Three fighters tested positive for marijuana in in-competition testing done by the TDLR at UFC Fight Night 104 on Feb. 4 in Houston. Two of them, Niko Price and Curtis Blaydes, had their wins overturned. All (the third was Abel Trujillo) were suspended 90 days. USADA did not pursue any sanctions against those fighters, because their levels of marijuana metabolites did not meet the WADA threshold. If any marijuana is detected in a TDLR test, the test is considered a failure.
Casey (6-4, 1 NC) won the fight against Aguilar, 30-27, prevailing in all three rounds clearly. The Hawaii resident is a promising name in the 115-pound women’s division. Casey, 30, had two straight wins before falling to top strawweight Claudia Gadelha last November and would have three victories in four fights if not for the test failure

Amanda Ribas claims innocence after potential anti-doping violation, vows to be UFC champ

Image

On the heels of being pulled from her UFC debut due do a potential anti-doping policy violation, Amanda Ribas said she hopes to prove her innocence.

On Thursday, the UFC and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced Ribas (6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) had been informed of a potential violation and pulled from her promotional debut against Juliana Lima (9-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) next month at the TUF 25 Finale in Las Vegas.

Today, the women’s strawweight told MMAjunkie in a text message she did not knowingly take any illegal substances and still harbors a goal of becoming a UFC champion.

“I have been competing at a high level in judo and bjj since I was very young,” Ribas said in the message. “Recently, I have achieved my dream of fighting in the UFC. I’m completely against any form of cheating in sports, as the use of PEDs. During my whole career I have never made use of any illegal substance, and I did not use anything now. I have no idea as to the origin of my positive test with USADA. I am working with USADA along with my managers and trainers to find out how this happened. I will prove my innocence. I will fight in the UFC and I will become UFC champ!”

Ribas and Lima were set to meet in a women’s strawweight fight at the TUF 25 Finale, which takes place July 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass, though the bout order hasn’t been finalized.

Ribas was flagged, USADA said in a statement, for an out-of-competition sample collected earlier this month on June 7. The UFC is seeking a new opponent for Lima so she can remain on the card.

Ribas, who turned pro in 2014, is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo black belt. The 23-year-old Brazilian and American Top Team fighter has won six of her seven pro bouts with three knockouts and two submissions.
